Next up, we have Nicolas Yu. Anyone who watched Oliver! would’ve had their hearts stolen by him! He is also joined by his parents, and together they talk about their experiences with Oliver!
Nicholas:
I was a 9-year-old thief in Fagin's gang, small but sly; I wore a hat and filthy clothes. I miss the entire Oliver! family and the audience who gave us great support and encouragement.
My three tips for giving a goodperformance are: listen carefully, think thoroughly and put it in action. Ten minutes before the show begins, I would take a deep breath and relax.
Through Oliver!, I most importantly learned how to organize myself: to be punctual, to eat well, to get enough sleep, to stay healthy and to finish my homework. The most challenging thing was learning some dance moves for the songs. They were hard for me because it was the first time for me to do this musical performance.
If I had one superpower, I want to be able to do anything without being taught. If I could meet any artist for a day, I would like to meet Jay Chou, he is very talented in music and is a great singer.
This is just the beginning, I'm ready for the next YAF audition!
Nicolas’ Parents:
Nicolas learnt so many technical skills from YAF, including great body movements and varied facial expressions. He became a more responsible and open-minded person. Once he had committed to the show, and was in the rehearsal room, he was on his own. He learned to secure his place in the group, to communicate with his teammates, to take care of himself and most of all, this experience gave him so much love and care that will last forever.
The administration team of YAF did a great job. They sent us all the information that was needed for us to plan our timetable. Once we got the rehearsal schedule, we planned our schedule, making sure that Nicolas would have enough time to eat, rest, do homework and travel between different places. Whenever we had any queries, YAF responded immediately. So really, it was YAF who planned well and Nicolas’ school who gave great support. We simply did the follow-up.
Worries were always those unforeseen factors, such as changing weather conditions that would make him sick, or political instability which would impact the rehearsal schedule and affect traffic.
Nicolas’ experience with YAF was totally beyond our expectations. Apart from rehearsals where he would dance and act, YAF also provided other skills training sessions, such as vocal training and make-up training. They would help the children to get to know more about the play and help them be more involved in the making of Oliver!
We would like to thank YAF & Lindsey for giving Nicolas such a fantastic opportunity to be a member of the Oliver! family, which gave him much knowledge, skills and love.
